Class action lawsuit against RCMP now involves about 400 women alleging harassment

RCMP logoFemale officers and civilian employees join former Cpl. Janet Merlo in sexual harassment suit

By Natalie Clancy, CBC News, May 31, 2015

Nearly 400 female RCMP officers and civilian employees from across Canada are asking a B.C judge to certify a class action lawsuit filed by Cpl. Janet Merlo over sexual harassment and gender discrimination at a hearing Monday.

“My name is on there, but there’s 400 ladies standing behind … from nine provinces and all the territories” said Merlo, who is so far the only named plaintiff in a case that has been making its way through the courts for three years.

“It speaks to a problem that’s systemic and that’s nationwide” Merlo said.

HOT SNAKES: Sled Island 2012

BeatRoute Magazine

EMERGING FROM THEIR HARDCORE HIBERNATION

Your quintessential, all-American post-hardcore band, Hot Snakes is the herpetological dream-child of San Diego rockers Rick Froberg and John “The Swami” Reis, both formerly of Pitchfork and Drive Like Jehu. A tightly-fit group with a free-wheelin’ spirit and punk-fed sound, Hot Snakes tore a gaping hole in grunge’s plaid-flannel mosquito-netting. Obsessed fans and startled peers couldn’t get enough of the brooding self-immolation heard on early works, Automatic Midnight (2000) and Suicide Invoice (2002), the nonchalant melodrama of 2005’s Peel Session EP and ensuing insanity of their band’s sole live recording, Thunder Down Under (2006). Throughout, Hot Snakes never shied away from exercising their musical might, standing pat in the centre of a celluloid cyclone. Then, just like that, Froberg and company suddenly called it quits: after half-a-decade of laying it all on the line, Hot Snakes had reached a dead end.

Then, after a prolong…

WHITE DENIM

My review: of an album you should buy to make your summer that much sweeter…

BeatRoute Magazine

WHITE-DENIM-CORSICANA-LEMONADE

CORSICANA LEMONADE, DOWNTOWN MUSIC

Austin, Texas’s smoothest psych rock outfit, White Denim, returns with Corsicana Lemonade, a sun-speckled vacation for winter-weary ears. The fifth studio album from these folked-up jam junkies displays evidence of considerable artistic growth and the conquest of introspective songwriting summits. Bold and refreshing, Corsicana Lemonade effectively bottles the heady rambles and unfettered frenzies of their previous effort, the effervescent D. Opening the proceedings with “At Night in Dreams,” a self-assured White Denim busts out a fat-bottomed boogie that would have Janis Joplin storming the stage to get a piece of the action. Streetwise yet organic anthems are perfectly stewarded forth by vocalist/guitarist James Petralli’s bluesy wails. Soaring over Woodstock-inspired sonic vistas, Petralli’s soulful intonations conjure images of the Gibb brothers locked in mortal combat with My Morning Jacket’s Tom “Two-Tone Tommy” Blankenship. Deliberately sculpted pieces, like the syncopated ditty “Limited by Stature” and…

Bully Bloggers

by Jack Halberstam

I was watching Monty Python’s The Life of Brian from 1979 recently, a hilarious rewriting of the life and death of Christ, and I realized how outrageous most of the jokes from the film would seem today. In fact, the film, with its religious satire and scenes of Christ and the thieves singing on the cross, would never make it into cinemas now. The Life of Brian was certainly received as controversial in its own day but when censors tried to repress the film in several different countries, The Monty Python crew used their florid sense of humor to their advantage. So, when the film was banned in a few places, they gave it a tagline of: “So funny it was banned in Norway!”

Humor, in fact, in general, depends upon the unexpected (“No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!”); repetition to the point of hilarity “you can…

SLED ISLAND 2014: PUBLIC ANIMAL

Lemme tell you why I love this band.

BeatRoute Magazine

Public-Animal-,SPACE TRUCKIN’ WITH THE WALT WHITMAN OF CANADIAN ROCK ‘N’ ROLL

There’s no denying it: fame is a public animal. Coming to terms with the crux of his mid-life meets mid-career crossroads, Canadian rock icon Ian Blurton is determined to take his music to the next level. Coming off of the 2011 dissolution of his incendiary hard-rock outfit C’mon, Blurton was itching to forge a new group that would share songwriting work and accolades equally. Bella Clava’s dauntless keyboardist, Caitlin Dacey was amongst the first to ascend the ranks of Blurton’s private party of four. Swiftly joined by Tricky Woo’s Eric Larock on bass and The Lying Cheats’ Ryan Gassi on drums, Dacey surmises that, “You’d have to be a blind fool to pass up a chance to collaborate with an artistic workhorse like Blurton!”

“When Ian mentioned that he was interested in putting band together based on friendship and…

SLED ISLAND COMEDY 2014: HARI KONDABOLU

A Sunday afternoon chat I had with Brooklyn comedian and podcaster Hari Kondabolu.

AB-CITY-Hari-Kondabolu---Photo-Credit-Karsten-MoranHULLABALOOZA! KONDABOLU BRINGS HIS BIG APPLE BANTER TO THE PRAIRIES

Contentedly situated amidst the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn, New York, stand-up comedian Hari Kondabolu is heard around the world, thanks to his mercurial podcasts. A cunning linguist who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Politics and a Master’s degree in Human Rights, the erudite Kondabolu has broken down racial and geographic barriers in finding new ways to disappoint his parents. More often than not, his accomplice of choice is his brother, Ashok, who routinely accompanies Hari on his conversational misadventures. Discussing everything from having one’s wallet stolen to the hot-button of cultural appropriation, “The Untitled Kondabolu Brothers Podcast” has introduced an international audience to the candid, fraternal side of his rather astute comedic demeanour.

“When it comes to podcasts, my brother and I have been strangely productive, professionally-speaking, despite of the weaknesses of our technical abilities,” says Kondabolu…
